Death Defying

The bikini-clad young women, sunbathing on the lower side of the green-water quarry and not paying him enough attention, were why he circled the quarry on foot in his bathing trunks until he stood at cliff top on the quarry’s opposite side. He could see the women talking over there when he waved and jumped way out so he might clear the young trees growing out of the cliff face. Nevertheless, branches tore gashes in him along his 75-foot drop to the water. Body weight on the long plunge drove him so deep that he struggled to hold his breath during the frantic fight to resurface. Gasping from that effort, he thrashed, choked, spanked his way through 100 yards of water, bleeding, smarting, and lamenting all the life-threatening show-offs for female attention. Finally regaining the lower-side shore, he heaved and slithered up over its edge, landing prone and exhausted in front of the women. “Coulda died…Never shoulda done it,” he panted with a sob. The women turned from excited, animated conversation, looked blankly at one another and at him, and said in unison: “Done what?”
